Lessons for Kids

Music classes for primary school children require a different approach to those for teenagers and adults. Our tutor is fully DBS checked and has over 20 years experience of teaching younger students.

Coda Guitar accepts new students from school year 1 and above, and we’re happy for children to learn on acoustic and electric guitars, and ukuleles. Smaller sized nylon string guitars or ukuleles are usually recommended for beginners, but we’re happy to teach budding rock stars with electric guitars!

Classes should be fun, interesting and reflect a more gradual development of music skills. They often revolve around using ‘The Guitarst’s Way‘ tuition books, which give younger students a good foundation in playing and reading music, and offer progression onto ABRSM classical grade exams. Children can also learn using Rockschool books, which can lead to rock and pop grades for electric and acoustic guitar, and ukulele. Students usually learn different styles over time, so the initial approach is chosen to suit individuals and the type of instrument.

Our youngest students start learning without formal music, and develop their skills through matching notes to coloured dots and learning classics such as Twinkle Twinkle and Old MacDonald! They are usually able to progress onto music books after a short time. Sometimes guitars can be too big for younger students, but can be adapted through fitting a capo on the neck and retuning the strings.

Parents are encouraged to sit in on lessons and participate in their child’s learning experience. Classes are held at a convenient WF1 location and students are welcome from Wakefield, Batley, Castleford, Dewsbury, Ossett, Leeds and the surrounding area. If travel is difficult, there is also the possibility of learning from home.

Sion has been teaching my 8 year old daughter Mabel for a while now. He is very patient with her, and allows her to learn in a fun relaxed environment. She really looks forward to her lessons every week, and is doing great! Would definitely recommend.
Claire Burdekin, parent of Mabel, Wakefield

Skype Lessons

Coda Guitar offers Skype music lessons to those students who want the benefits of tailored, face to face tuition from the comfort of their own home. Lessons are available for guitar, bass, ukulele and more (see our instruments section for more information). Our tutor has over 20 years teaching, and 35 years playing experience, and is fully DBS checked. Lessons are also offered using alternate platforms: Zoom, Google Hangouts or Meet, Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp.

Skype lessons are effectively the same as face to face lessons, in that it’s possible for our tutor quickly correct posture and technique issues (through observation and demonstration), and that lessons are entirely focused on the requirements of individual students (when compared to online video lessons). Lessons are always tailored to suit individual tastes, and cover a wide range of styles across different ability levels. Whether you’re looking to learn for fun, complete music grades or need help with school / college courses, Skype lessons can be just as effective in aiding development as face to face lessons.

Lesson plans are established prior to Skype sessions, and PDF scores, audio + video demos, backing tracks and useful online links are shared to support lessons and aid home practice. New scores can easily be prepared using Guitar Pro and Sibelius applications, and new audio + video demos can be produced using Coda Guitar’s music studio, centered around the Cubase Pro 9 recording suite, and a Logitech C922 web cam.

A detailed record of lesson progression is kept to ensure that students develop their playing in a thorough and efficient way, and our tutor is available to answer queries in between sessions.

As with face to face lessons, the first Skype lesson is only £10 for 60 minutes, so students can experience the format before deciding to commit to regular lessons.

First class guitar tutor. Sion is extremely patient, and always has suggestions as to what to learn next, and what to practice at home. He always remembers to contact me to arrange a lesson, and is extremely accommodating with which days and times he can offer, which is invaluable as I work shifts and can’t make regular appointments. Highly recommended.

I only took up the guitar in my late 40s, never having played any instrument before and quickly began to enjoy it. I don’t always have the time or the inclination to practice but Sion is always encouraging and patient. He’s guided me to merits in grade 3 and 4 rock guitar and always has a range of suggestions of what I can attempt next. Lessons are always relaxed yet challenging. It’s great to feel like I’m making progress. Looking forward to grade 5.

We’re thrilled with Luke’s progress who only started 4 months ago. It has been fantastic to listen to him develop his skills, from the initial sounds to tunes in such a short space of time. He is not only playing the guitar but also beginning to read music. Luke is really enjoying his lessons. He is learning different styles at a pace which suits him, this has inspired his own taste in music.

Great music teacher lessons are taken by Sion BA(hons) music in a relaxed comfortable atmosphere. I’ve been taking lessons now for two years and Sion has helped me pass music exams and understand music theory highly recommended.

Joe has been receiving lessons for 12 months and his progress both in practical and music reading terms, I can only describe as remarkable, bearing in mind Joe could not read a note of music prior to commencing lessons. Joe looks forward to attending lessons and I would recommend Sion as a tutor to others without hesitation.
